China has taken a policy to re-impose tariffs or levies on coal imports from Russia, Mongolia, South Africa and the United States. This policy takes effect on January 1, 2024.
On the other hand, the imposition of coal import duties certainly has no effect on Indonesia.
Executive Director of the Indonesian coal Mining Association Hendra Sinadia explained, this is guaranteed by the SEAN China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA).
“The ACFTA has been in effect since 2015. In addition, Indonesian coal in the total portion of China’s imports has also increased,” Hendra told Kontan, Thursday (4/1).
Hendra continued, the difference in coal quality and competitive selling prices also hoisted Indonesia’s coal exports to China.
According to him, despite the imposition of import levies on coal products of Russia and other countries. Generally, the quality of coal sold is different.
“The quality of Russian coal is generally in high calories in contrast to coal from Indonesia which is generally of medium and low calorie quality,” explained Hendra.
Just so you know, from the production target of 710 million tons this year, the government has set a potential domestic market obligation (DMO) of 181 million tons. Meanwhile, the export portion is estimated to reach 529 million tons.
