PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) which operates in Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province has developed an innovation to process mining waste sand from the process of processing rocks and ores (tailings)
PTFI Tailings Utilization Project Manager Harry Joharsyah through a release to ANTARA in Timika, Monday (1/22/2024), said that tailings are a resource that can provide benefits to the lives of people in this area.
“After the renegotiation process of the 2018 contract of work, there is a requirement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) so that the tailings can be reused,” he said.
According to him, tailings managed by PTFI can be processed into useful resources, PTFI involves a number of educational institutions such as the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Cenderawasih Papua University, and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR).
“There are two success stories that we achieved from utilizing these tailings, first in 2005 as material to build bridges in Papua and second into precast concrete and then asphalt filler,” he said.
He explained that currently precast concrete and asphalt filler made from tailings are used to meet PTFI’s internal needs.
“The utilization and use of tailings as asphalt filler can be seen in the Rimba Papua Hotel area, Clean Water Treatment Facility (WTP), access to the parking area of the Nemangkawi mining Institute (IPN) and Rimba Papua Golf,” he said.
He added that PTFI had conducted an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) study from 1998 to 2002 to examine the effects of mine residual sand on aquatic biota, human and plant health.
“The results of the study state that the environmental impact of tailings deposition is in accordance and consistent with AMDAL 300K approved by the government,” he said.
