Indonesia's commitment to encouraging mineral downstreaming is increasingly evident.PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia (PT BAI), a subsidiary of PT INALUM and PT ANTAM Tbk, is preparing for the next stage of development of the strategic Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) Phase 2 project in Mempawah, West Kalimantan. This project is currently in the Feasibility Study (FS) preparation stage, which will be an important basis for realizing further development.PT INALUM's Business Development Director, Melati Sarnita, revealed that the company is currently prioritizing the completion of the commissioning of SGAR Phase 1, which is scheduled to be fully operational in the first semester of 2025.“We are currently focused on completing the commissioning of SGAR Phase 1 so that it can operate stably and meet the needs of the alumina market. On the other hand, we are also designing a funding scheme and exploring strategic partnerships to support the feasibility study of SGAR Phase 2."Hopefully, the Final Investment Decision (FID) can be achieved in the same year," explained Melati.Director of Business Development of PT ANTAM Tbk, I Dewa Wirantaya, said that the feasibility study is an important step to ensure the sustainability of the project in terms of technology, production, and investment.“Completion of the Feasibility Study is the main key so that the FID process can be implemented immediately. In addition, we ensure that SGAR Phase 1 can operate stably as a foundation to continue the development of Phase 2," said Dewa at the ANTAM General Meeting of Shareholders (GMS) in Jakarta. The SGAR project is part of the strategic initiative of the mining Industry BUMN Holding, MIND ID.With a production capacity of up to 1 million tons of alumina per year, SGAR Phase 1 was inaugurated directly by President Joko Widodo in September 2024.This project not only aims to meet domestic needs, but also to reduce dependence on alumina imports. The completion of SGAR Phase 2 is expected to increase national production capacity and support the growth of downstream industries in the mining sector. As a real step in supporting mineral downstreaming, SGAR in Mempawah is a symbol of the transformation of the Indonesian mining industry which is not only oriented towards exporting raw materials, but also increasing added value through domestic processing.PT BAI, together with PT INALUM and PT ANTAM, is optimistic that this development will make a major contribution to the national economy while strengthening Indonesia's position in the global market.
