Director General of Minerals and Coal (Minerba) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Tri Winarno officially flagged off Indonesia’s Garuda Rescue Nusantara (GRN) Team to compete in the mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) 2025 at Langley Park, Perth, Australia.In a statement received in Jakarta on Friday, Tri said GRN’s participation in MERC represents Indonesia’s commitment to raising mining safety standards.“Keep up the spirit to win, but remember that the far greater mission is to bring home knowledge, best practices, and a spirit of professionalism to strengthen mining safety in Indonesia,” Tri said in his remarks at the send-off ceremony at the ESDM Ministry Office, Jakarta, on Friday.Tri expressed hope that the GRN team would compete with full integrity as Indonesia’s representative, absorb international experience, and share it to build the capacity of the national mining industry.The send-off event was also attended by GRN Supervisory Board Chair R. Teguh Saptosubroto and GRN Foundation Chair Adri Thanada.Participation in 2025 continues Indonesia’s involvement in MERC 2023 and 2024, in which the team won five international awards.At MERC 2025, the GRN Team will compete in eight categories: Confined Space Rescue; Emergency Response Team Readiness; Fire Fighting; First Aid; Hazmat; Road Crash Rescue; Vertical Rescue; and Incident Management.All categories are designed to test the team’s readiness and capability to handle various internationally standardized emergency scenarios.The Director General also expressed appreciation to the Garuda Rescue Nusantara Foundation for its consistency in development and education in the field of mining rescue.“GRN has proven that commitment to safety is not just a slogan, but is realized through coaching, training, and sending the best teams to compete and learn at the international level. This can serve as an example for all mining industry players in Indonesia,” said Tri Winarno.The Foundation Chair and GRN Team Manager for MERC 2025, Adri Thanada, conveyed the team’s readiness to face the international competition.“We are carrying a mission to learn and exchange experiences with international practitioners. What we gain will become crucial capital to strengthen ERT capabilities in Indonesia’s mining industry,” he said.The departure of the Garuda Rescue Nusantara Team marks an important moment in efforts to strengthen the national mining safety culture, as well as a symbol of synergy between the government and industry players in enhancing preparedness for emergency situations.The GRN Team is scheduled to depart for Perth on 22 November 2025, while MERC 2025 will take place on 28–30 November 2025.
